  17. <p>    Colombia's Banco de Occidente has no U.S. branches, but its
  18. Panamanian subsidiary did a booming underground business in
  19. America. The Panama bank is expected to plead guilty in Atlanta
  20. federal court this week to charges that it laundered hundreds
  21. of millions of dollars in drug profits for Colombia's Medellin
  22. cocaine cartel. The bank allegedly collected the illicit money
  23. in New York bank accounts, from which money was wired
  24. electronically to Europe and Latin America.
  25. </p>
  26. <p>    As part of the plea agreement, the Panamanian bank could
  27. pay a $5 million fine, giving up most of its $6.7 million net
  28. worth. The fine would be the largest U.S. penalty ever paid by
  29. a bank on money-laundering charges and would be the first time
  30. a foreign bank with no formal operations in the U.S. has been
  31. convicted of such violations.
